Turn Back the Block and various churches, civic organizations, and community groups worked together to clean up the streets of Harrisburg on April 29th at the 6th annual Harrisburg Clean & Green. By the end of the event, we collected over 188 tires, filled a huge dumpster to the brim with litter, and accomplished some great work at the Harrisburg Community Garden and Crawford Ave. Baptist Church. Many neighborhood children participated in the clean-up, and new neighbors became acquainted with each other. These Facebook comments sum up the success of the day well:
“Awesome day! Do not know when I have enjoyed a Saturday morning so much. Thanks organizers.”
“Best Clean and Green ever!”
Many thanks to our partners that made the event possible:
On April 27th, volunteers from Bank of America helped us get our newest home move-in ready. Last year they were digging the foundation for the home at 627 Metcalf St., and this month they helped with final clean up. They even got to join in on a fun phone call with the homeowner candidate (whom we just approved for ownership the day prior), to gave him the news that he was accepted as the new owner for the home!
What: Clearing demo debris and cutting grass at two Turn Back The Block sites
How: Email turnbacktheblock@gmail.com to RSVP and bring a completed volunteer release form (located under the “How Can I Help” tab. Please include the number in your group in your e-mail. Wear sturdy shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Work gloves will be provided.
1733 Hicks St. was a fire damaged home that we acquired last year. The home was condemned and recently demolished. Volunteers will be helping clean up the demo debris.
We also have a new home that is nearing completion at 627 Metcalf St. Volunteers will be helping with lawn maintenance there.
